Most Popular Names From the ’70s

Baby names from the 1970s, “the seventies,” are probably what you expect. With the most popular boy name in the ’70s being Michael, not much has changed. However, the most popular girl name in the ’70s was Jennifer, and we don’t really hear too many newborns with the name Jennifer anymore. I guess we could call names from the ’70s “boomer names,” as boomers were the ones naming babies during the ’70s.

With past trends coming back in full force, there’s no reason to start bringing back the baby names from the ’70s. Plus, baby names were starting to get out of hand in the 2010s. Many parents were redoing older names with different spellings and while some of those alternative names were actually cute, others were just too much.

The 1970’s era was known for many things, Woodstock had just ended and bands like The Rolling Stone, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and Aerosmith were some of the biggest bands being played. The 1970s was the hippie decade and terms like groovy and peace were developed as common slang. It was also the decade where famous artists Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin passed away both from drug overdoses.

Hippie girl baby names include Aurora, Avery, Autumn, Daisy, Faye, Hayden, Faith, Lena, Liberty, Luna, North, Poppy, Willow, Archie, Waverly, Dusk, Lynn, Arrowleigh, Forrest, Jane, Indigo, Yellow, Leva, Alivia, Jasmine, and Isla.

Hippie boy baby names include Wilder, Ziggy, Oliver, Arlo, Wren, Fin, Milo, Asher, Jasper, Kai, Hugo, Azra, Jace, Atlas, Levi, Niko, Leo, Nakiea, August, Deacon, Remy, Dean, Aspen, Titus, Wayne, and Damien.

The ’70s were “the time to be alive” to some and many young adults wish they grew up in that era (I don’t blame them– Disney World first opened in 1971!). It makes sense that popular baby names from the 1970s will start trending again, so why not be ahead of the curve?
